The Qualcomm-led consortium would initially build between 9,000 and 10,000 base stations to support a 3G cellphone service in Japan.

Amazing! Wish I could say I was happy about it. I don't think it's a good thing that QCOM is consistently backed into a corner and forced to brawl it's way out. Why does this keep happening?

The partner will be Sprint/WCOM IMO. It's a real gamble. How will things look if they lose? And they're admitting they'll have a tough time with DS chipsets.

Even though I certainly enjoyed the run up in my bank account thanks to the sale of infra and handset division, I'm not so sure that it's all that great that such a disproportionate amount of net income is derived from royalties. And a DS sweep might only perpetuate this problem..
