Just because he pulled his wallet out to identify himself (and because he was black while the firing squad was not.) So guess which incident provokes national outrage among the Republican Leadership? The GOP has been so diabolically hypocritical this Easter that one might expect to find scriptural augury. Perhaps a prediction of the anti-christ arriving on the back of an elephant?

We are left with Elian's courageous cousin, Marisleysis, who Easter morning told truth to power, an American citizen speaking to the nation about the actions of the American government. Hmmm. One person's "courageous" "American citizen" is another person's venom-spitting whack-job, I guess. And BTW, there are very few who dare to act as "Americans" in Little Havana. Anyone there who invokes their right ot free speech a dissenting opinion are openly physically attacked, not unlike the country they fled. Shameful. seeing the boy had bonded with the cousin Well if Marisleysis says so ... after all she is a courageous American citizen. ;-) (Reagan) would have made a statement laying out the facts and ended it, "The boy stays, the dream endures, the American story continues. And if Mr. Castro doesn't like it, well, I'm afraid that's really too bad." But then he was a man. It wasn't about what Mr. Castro wanted, but what Elian's father wanted. But I'll agree that Reagan would have acted to build his image and use Elian as a political football to boot upside Castro's head rather than consider Elian's best interests...This kind of loopy jingoism is why so many non-righties (that is, anyone to the left of Jesse Helms) ignore the WSJ op-ed...ready for wrapping those fish...

What a load of drivel! The politicians within the party that heralds family values decides that when it comes to dealing with Castro, the father's rights and family values can go by the wayside. The child belongs with his surviving parent, if he/she is a fit parent and that is the law. This is the reason why the Miami relatives who were so very commendatory about Elian's father being a loving and caring individual suddenly changed their tune when their custody of the child was to be revoked and started saying that he is an abusive father. Much of the concern of the Cuban community in Miami has nothing to do with the welfare of Elian as much as their hatred of Castro. The Miami relatives who claim to be concerned about Elian's interests above all else, subject him to a media circus, an interview with ABC and -- most pathetic and inexcusable of all -- is the video of the 6 year old wagging his finger and telling his father that he does not want to return to Cuba! The mother who is repeatedly proclaimed as having given her life to allow her son to live in freedom was apparently primarily motivated by her desire to be with her boy-friend who had decided to move to the US -- this according to her own mother. If the criteria for deciding whether a child or for that matter an adult is allowed to live in the US, should be based on where there would be more freedom and opportunity, the US is probably head and shoulders above most other countries in the world -- but will the politicians who so acclaim Elian's rights be as vocal about other immigrants who suffer from lack of freedom and opportunity coming here?? Not a chance! I am critical of Reno and the Justice Department -- but only because they allowed the situation to fester this long. I don't care for Gore who with his flip-flopping on this issue has shown that principles don't matter one iota to him -- just political expediency. Do I know that the father genuinely wants to return to Cuba -- no I don't. But do I assume that he is necessarily prevented from expressing his point of view about where he wants to live, by the Cubans --no I don't believe that either. I know people who live in other parts of the world with a lower standard of living and less freedom than they would have in the US -- who would never want to ever emigrate to this country. It is not a knock against the US that they feel that way -- just that people may have varying reasons for wanting to live in other countries. I have no desire to live in Cuba -- but I am willing to accept that the father may wish to do just that! There is a great danger in letting value judgements about another country's form of government and cultural and social mores determine whether a child is better off being raised here rather than there; starting on that track can open a hornet's nest.
