I have been searching various news sites, and all I can find is Juan Gonzalez's unverified claim that he had custody of the child. Additionally, I have found allegations by a former neighbor, now in Miami, that he beat his wife and child brutally. There is also a controversy swirling around the paternal grandmother, who visited earlier, over whether she engaged in sexually abusive behavior, or was merely misunderstood due to a culture gap. On the other hand, the Miami relatives have been accused of brain- washing, and trying to turn him against his father. From what I have been reviewing, if it were decided that the relatives should relinquish custody, it would have been preferable to have transferred custody to a third party, with visitation rights on both sides. Also, that would have allayed the fears that the father would act in defiance of the recent court order, and take Elian out of the country, and therefore would likely have made tactical assault unnecessary.........
