Dear Cap'n:

They had an offer on the table, which was published.

The guv never published their offer did they?

It looks like the guv's offer is we will break you!

Now, please explain what "cutting losses" means.

Captain, Microsoft had been cornered by the feds, AGs and the judge. They were going to try to get microsoft and they got ms finally. Contrary to public opinion, Americans trust the government. Eventually, public gets turned around to the government's way of thinking. Only the courts can help the ruled from the rulers. We will see what happens in courts eventually. The deals offered by the gov were ridiculous and so is this breakup proposal. It may turn out to be good for shareholders, but it is a shame that they want to break up an American success story.

The only way was to fight the gov in the courts. That was the only option left open by the gov from the beginning and the one which will be taken by the management.
