The third party you speak of was Aaron Podhurst - liberal democrat and 30 year (ex?) friend of Reno.

He is contradicting your impression that the family was intransigent. He is saying this morning that he was within minutes of coming to a peaceful agreement with the family that he thought, from his conversations with Reno, would be acceptable to the government.

He is also contradicting the "justice" department's claim that he knew the raid was coming saying Reno promised him the govm't wouldn't use force. He is saying he found out about the raid when the person he was talking to screamed out about the storm troopers invading and the phone went dead.

"We could have arranged a peaceful solution. We were not very far away," said Miami attorney Aaron Podhurst, who said he is a longtime friend of Attorney General Janet Reno and was on hold in a telephone conversation with her when the U.S. marshals entered the Miami home.

Speaking on ABCNEWS' Good Morning America, Podhurst said the entire leadership of the Cuban-American community had agreed to the latest terms of the government's plan to arrange a "safe house" in Washington where Elian, his father and the Miami relatives could live and transfer custody over several days.
