Re: chic, yes, exercising the Jul45 now to get an earlier LT gain makes sense to me. Of course with the caveat that the LT gain could disappear quickly if 1)Willy lives up to its hype, and 2)it arrives before Mustang and 1.5G TBird.

John,
You're points 1 and 2 were exactly why I was thinking of exercising now. Things could change next year. The best chance of taking a long term gain would be to get your start date ASAP. I might exercise early. I've got to hold out for a while to make sure the market stabilizes.

And you can always sell covered calls as long as they are not "in the money" without disturbing your holding period for LT gains.

It's very prudent to be cognizant of that AMD may become as it used to be, but in my opinion AMD is going to be a great stock for a very long time as the competition landscape has been permanently changed.

If Willy is going to be great product and cost competitive with AMD offerings, it may stall the rate of further growth of AMD, but I don't see AMD going back to its old days of losing money.

With added capacity( 10 to 12M CPUS per quarter in Y2K1), more products (different flavors of Athlon), narrowed technology gap, I believe AMD is on a coarse of permanent stability for a long time to come. Welcome comments on this from you and others.

Re: chic, yes, exercising the Jul45 now to get an earlier LT gain makes sense to me.

Petz and thread,
I'm going to exercise maybe Friday or early next week. I want to see what comes out of AMD's shareholders meeting and INTC's meeting with analysts, both on Thursday.

I'm going to have to take the entire $45 on margin. In this case, I have to buy puts. I know this sounds like a waste of money, but what if Dresdan burns to the ground? Who knows what could happen, but if this thing tanks for any reason, I have to have a put above my margin price. I can't get stuck with hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt if some disaster strikes.

Taking that into account, what put (month and strike) would you recommend?
