i remember that little Hashimoto faux-pas very well...he said in essence "you may own the house, but we hold the mortgage".

imo were it not for Japan's dependence security-wise they would have long ago cut the bubble down. it really is Japan's giant capital exports that are one of its major fuels. for Japan very deep questions about its own identity and future are at stake here imo. i'm just waiting for the one G7 meeting where Summers' bull-in-china-shop way of talking to the Japanese leads to a fiasco in the form of a little financial demonstration of power...

in a way Japan is one of the keys to all this. the other is the sclerotic European continent with its dot-bomb currency....
