The revised earnings consensus for Amazon's first quarter is a loss of 36 cents per share, according to a survey of analysts by First Call/Thomson Financial, which compiles brokerage estimates. In the year-ago quarter, Amazon posted a loss of 12 cents per share. Implied volatility for the May 50 calls stood at around 123 to 125 percent, up from last week's level of around 115 percent, and the implied volatility of the May 40 puts was around 130 percent, up from 125 percent last Thursday, said a designated primary market maker with Boyle & Snyder Trading LLC at the Chicago Board Options Exchange. "Earnings are due on Wednesday, so the volatility is creeping up," the market maker said. "They are buying the May 40 puts for downside protection." On the CBOE, the May 40 puts firmed 3/8 to 2-15/16 on volume of 308 and open interest of 2,432 at 11:16 a.m. CDT (1616 GMT). In contrast, the May 50 calls fell 2-3/4 to 5-1/2 on turnover of 29 contracts and open interest of 2,114.
