NO it might not happen! You mean it could take 10 billion to make it happen, that's if Japan lets QCOM and it's partners to the table so that would mean someone gets shut out since there is only going to be three not four. Why would DDI continue to up grade when they are going to trash it down the road?

If you believe this, no wonder you think the situation is so dire. DDI is NOT going to trash their cdmaONE system. The only question is what type of technology they will install into the NEW spectrum which is going to be awarded by the Japanese government. Nothing has changed (at least to my knowledge), with regards to DDI's plans to upgrade their cdmaONE network to 1xrtt.

Greg: You misunderstand. The path to CDMA 2000 is on current frequencies. The possibility of use of CDMA 2000 on the new frequencies is frosting on the cake. It might help to review some of the previous posts here which cover that point.

DDI and its partners already have a data rate in operation in Japan which is faster then the so called WCDMA which DoCoMo proposes to introduce a year from now. That is IS 95B. In addition, 1XRTT which will double voice capacity on the frequencies now in use and enhance data speed further is on track for use in Japan on the same frequencies now in use toward the end of this year or early next. The chips are available now for this and DDI plans to use this system as soon as possible. This is a "no brainer" since it increases efficiency at low cost. This is the first phase of 3rd gen CDMA 2000 (or as it is now labelled - MC).Then HDR will be introduced. The second phase of CDMA 2000 (MC)is 3XRTT which can also be used on current frequencies. None of this has anything whatsoever to do with what flavor of CDMA is used on the new spectrum.

Best.
