Dave - really TOO strange to be believed, ie that the Q's Japanese honcho would say these things in this way in public

Shots across the bow are, almost by definition, very public. They often don't work well otherwise. While I have no doubt that the news agency played with the text to make it as dramatic as possible (that's their job isn't it? - after all, the facts are boring), I don't doubt the gist of the statements. But I've been wrong before.

DaveMG. I tend to agree with you. Dow Jones is unreliable and often unbelievable when it comes to off shore QCOM news. Also, saying such things in that way in public is pretty implausable.
