RNWK--March Internet Ratings Show Lead Widening for RealNetworks Media Products; RealPlayer Usage Outstrips Microsoft, Apple Media Players RealPlayer Leads Adoption Rate for All Media Players; Real.com Network Moves into Top 10 Most Frequently Visited Web Sites
PR NEWSWIRE - April 24, 2000 09:02
SEATTLE, Apr 24, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- RealNetworks(R), Inc. (Nasdaq: RNWK), the recognized leader in media delivery on the Internet, today noted the release of two industry reports which highlight the continued strong growth and increased consumer usage of the RealNetworks suite of Internet media products and services.

The first report, issued by Nielsen//NetRatings, the Internet audience measurement service from Nielsen Media Research and NetRatings, Inc., for the month of March, revealed that RealPlayer(R) continues to widen its commanding lead over all other media players.

According to Nielsen's findings, during the past three months, usage of the RealPlayer grew by more than 2.2 million users, from 19.6 million users per month to 21.8 million users per month, far outpacing growth in usage of Windows Media and QuickTime. Over the same time period, Microsoft usage grew from only 7.4 to 8.6 million, while Apple's QuickTime usage grew from 7.0 to 7.5 million. With more than 115 million unique registered RealPlayer users worldwide, RealNetworks has long been a pioneering force in development of audio and video Internet services, and is it the most widely deployed media delivery system in the world.

In addition, a second report unveiled last week placed the Real.com(TM) Network among the ten most popular web site properties on the World Wide Web for the month of March, further underscoring the company's wide-spread consumer popularity and overall presence in the Internet media marketplace. According to the March Media Metrix Digital Media Audience Ratings issued on April 21, the Real.com Network had approximately 13.5 million unique visitors to its web sites last month -- an overall increase of nearly 597,000 new unique users since February.

At Number 10 on the Media Metrix list, the Real.com Network ranked ahead of such popular properties as Go2Net.com, AltaVista Network, eBay, and CNET Networks, and was only two positions behind the leading retail site, Amazon.com, solidifying its prominence and leadership in the field of Internet media delivery. Media Metrix is a worldwide leader in Internet and digital media analysis, and has been measuring audience usage and behavior since January 1996.

Hi Scott, enjoy your posts (as usual)...regarding your comment 'The Fear is Out There' - that's what I thought earlier this evening when I finally turned my TV on (CNBC), it appeared (I wasn't able to watch it) that they were showing narrated old black and white footage of the big market crash. That might add a few frayed nerves to some.
