and what should be done to take away their market power.

GST - part of the problem here is that it is a very difficult undertaking to develop a desktop operating system that supports a wide array of desktop applications. Doing so, requires a lot of money and a lot of talent.

So if you break Microsoft in two - into an OS company and an App company - will this result in more competition in the operating system market - and will it eliminate the possibility of competitive environments like that encountered by Netscape when Microsoft chose to bundle the browser in the OS?

In my mind, No. But you seem to think breaking up the company will solve the problem. I don't think you have any clue how difficult it is to create a desktop operating system. When and if Microsoft is broken in two, do you anticipate seeing a number of companies racing to enter the desktop operating system market? I don't. Why? Because doing so would cost a lot of money and would entail an enormous risk.

So please, explain in detail, how breaking up Microsoft will improve the competitive landscape - and how it will be beneficial to the IT economy. Because I fail to see it.

Thanks,
-Eric
