As I've always said, I'm still a rank newbie at all this, and am learning with each month that goes by. The last few months' lessons can be summed up simply: 1. too much margin kills (and more than a little can be too much); 2. volatility can cut both ways; and 3. long-term and short-term plays are fundamentally different creatures requiring different modes of analysis. Knowing what I know now, I might still have made some short-term plays (for fun if nothing else), and still have taken on some margin debt to do so. But I would have watched them like a hawk, not gotten complacent and greedy, and taken my profits when I could. As it is, I've made quite a round trip on some of them--exhibit A being my Gemstar Aug 85's, which I bought for an average of about 8, went up to the high 20s, and are now around 1. None of this is rocket science, of course; still, as Benjamin Franklin once wrote, "experience is an expensive school but some will learn in no other." Luckily I found the thread back in August, so dropping back to November has still left me with some healthy gains.... tekboy/Ares@nowonlyrationallyexuberant.com
