Tom Paine and Ben Franklin were atheists. You sure about that? Thomas Paine wrote a series of articles called "the American Crisis" Here are a few quotes in those writings: Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered ; yet we have this consolation with us, the harder the conflict the more glorius the triumph. What we obtain too cheaply, we esteem too lightly; 'tis dearness only that gives everything it's value. Heaven knows how to put a price tag on it's goods and it would be strange indeed if so celestial an article as freedom should not be so highly rated. ((wonder why an atheist would have any need or thought to mention hell and heaven in that parapraph))) The cause of America is in a great measure the cause of all mankind. Where, say some, is the king of America? I'll tell you, freind. He reigns above. (((why would an atheist say that the king reigns above?))) Yet that we may not appear to be defective even in earthly honors, let a day be solemnly set apart for proclaiming the charter; let it be placed on the devine law, the Word of God, let a crown be placed thereon. (((why would an atheist say the devine law the Word of God)))The Almighty implanted in us these inextinguishable feelings for good and wise purposes. They are the guardians of His image in our heart. They distinguish us from the herd of common animals. (((hmmmmmmm)))) It is to be noted that later he wrote "The Age of Reason" a work embracing Frenc Relativism, which cost him any popularity and in later years he voiced his wish that he had never written it and asked the Lord to be with him in his aloneness. Does not sound like a very good athiest, does he? :o) ****** And Franklin an atheist? well there are SO many quotes from his writings, that I will only use a couple. Hardly atheistic quotes wouldn't you agree? In his "Articles of Belief and Acts of Religion": It is that particular wise and good God, who is the Author and Owner of our system, that I propose for the Object of my praise and adoration. ((that's an atheist?? could have fooled me))) and here is a little snippet from a letter to a French ministry: Whoever shall introduce into public affairs the principles of primitive Christianity will change the face of the world. (((hmmmm))) And did you know that the first building of the University of Pennsylvania was donated by Ben Franklin. Know why he built it in the first place? To hold all the people that wanted to come hear the preaching of a close friend of Franklins, named George Whitefield, during what was called the "Great Awakening Revivals" . ((Why would an atheist build a building for a preacher of God's Word?))) hmmmmmm And finally on his pew in Christ Church, a plaque reads: "Here worshipped Benjamin Franklin, philosopher and patriot... Member of the Committee which erected the Spire of the Church. Interred according to the terms of his will in this churchyard." dan
