>>>Yes, I remember this. Does this have a bearing on the current case?<<< MSFT attempted to put Stac out of business by incorporating Stac technology into Windows. This was *after* they held merger/buyout talks with Stac, took a look at Stac technology and then called off the merger. Stac cried foul, sued and won. MSFT paid more than 100 million to Stac in cash and an equity stake. Same thing they tried with Netscape. Same thing they tried with Novell. Same thing they tried with Caldera. Similar thing they are now trying with Sun's Java. Stac sued and won. The Govt, on behalf of Netscape, sued and won. Caldera sued and MSFT quietly settled the case. I hope Sun sues them for monopolistic behaviour! See the relevance of my Stac analogy? What I dont understand is why MSFT has to cheat. They build good products although they never innovate. They always improve on other people's innovations. Hence Word, Windows, Excel, MS-DOS and IE. MSFT reminds me of a brilliant student, who otherwise would probably ace a test, but has an irresistible urge to cheat. >>>The best remedy is to bust up the company<<< Yes, this is the ONLY lasting remedy that will promote competition and innovation. Remember AT&T? They provided good phone service, but phone service was costly and restrictive. Hell, you could not even buy your own phone! You had to lease it from MA Bell. Do you remember how much they charged to call LA from Newyork? Now you can do it for 2cents, with no loss in quality. If AT&T had not been busted up, the commercial internet would probably NOT exist today. Remember ISDN? The product of the monopolistic bell companies. My local bell wanted to charge me $400 to install and $50 a month for 56K speed 2 years ago! Thank God for Cable modems. I paid my cable company zip to intall and $44/month. Now, MSFT is aiming at the internet with stuff like an incompatible Kerberos and DHTML. Very soon, if MSFT is not stopped, people running OSes other than Windows wont be able to view sites powered by IIS. Bye bye Apache, WebLogic, Java web server etc.. etc.. --Olu E.
