Since you mentioned the total amount of money in the market as a whole yesterday, I've been looking for data on that- it's a question I've never considered before. It's irksome that the information doesn't seem to be readily available.

The Nasdaq site provides a daily total of the total market value of the Nasdaq, but the information isn't up-to-date, the most recent number is for 3/31/00 - on that day there was $6.134 trillion, and the Nasdaq composite index was 4696, so they must weight it. I knew they weighted the Nasdaq 100, but didn't realize they weighted the composite. I've downloaded all the info for 2000 up to 3/31/00, and the total market value doesn't appear to be really closely related to the index - it's on an Excel table, and I would love to cut and paste it but I don't know how. If I figure out, I will.

The NYSE, on the other hand, gives the data on a monthly basis. At the end of March the total market value of the NYSE was $11.2 trillion, and the NYSE composite index was 647. So these aren't closely related, either.

TrimTabs will provide the data for a $24K annual fee.

The Wall Street Journal doesn't have it.

If anyone knows where to get the data, please tell me. I think it would be very helpful to know this information.

<edit>I just checked Barron's Market Lab, and they don't have daily or even weekly - Barron's website has February total for NYSE but not Nasdaq.
