Enhanced EMC Enterprise Storage Network Brings 'NAS' Into the World of 'SAN'
New and Expanded Offerings Deliver Open Connectivity from Workgroup to Workforce and Beyond
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 25, 2000--Advancing its position as the leading provider of open, highly reliable storage networking solutions, EMC Corporation today unveiled significant new network connectivity offerings. By connecting more of the enterprise to the information that drives business success, the EMC Enterprise Storage Network (ESN) offerings greatly enhance customers' ability to generate business value from information living within and outside the enterprise.

EMC provides a common, integrated storage network platform, raising the EMC Enterprise Storage Network above the widespread industry debate over the relative merits of network-attached storage (NAS) and storage-area networks (SAN). EMC Enterprise Storage Networks offer an ever-increasing range of connectivity options from NAS file servers to standard channel protocols such as Fibre Channel, SCSI and ESCON. This breadth of connectivity choices enables customers to consolidate distributed information from departments and business units throughout the enterprise, as well as from remote locations over wide-area networks.

The new EMC Enterprise Storage Network offerings include:

Major enhancements to EMC Celerra network-attached file server, the industry leader in NAS market share growth, delivering enterprise-class information sharing across any distance. New Celerra features elevate the value of its associated storage into a shared and protected resource in the EMC Enterprise Storage Network. They include Fibre Channel connectivity, support for VERITAS NetBackup for local backup and restore, enhanced Ethernet-based availability and enhanced business continuance and disaster recovery functionality.
A new lineup of EMC Connectrix 8- and 16-port departmental Fibre Channel switches, and major enhancements to EMC's 32-port Connectrix enterprise director. EMC's expanded Connectrix family enables customers to consolidate and centrally manage information from the enterprise data center to the distributed branch office and beyond.
``Fast companies are those that recognize and respond quickly to competitive opportunities and threats,'' said Michael Ruffolo, EMC's Executive Vice President of Global Sales, Services and Marketing. ``Only by effectively harnessing enterprise information that lives within the workgroup, throughout the workforce and beyond can organizations deliver `institutional knowledge' - information - to knowledge workers where and when they need it. Today, EMC is taking dramatic steps to help customers usher in the next generation of business success - built with information and resting on an unshakable infrastructure for proactively managing growth and change.''

Mark Dalic, resource manager with ALLTEL Information Services' telecommunication organization in Twinsburg, Ohio, said, ``Our business success rests squarely on our ability to access and profitably employ information universally -- within the enterprise and beyond -- regardless of server platform or application. EMC's new connectivity solutions give us the vertical leap in scale and flexibility we need.''

Celerra: The World's Fastest-Growing NAS Offering

According to International Data Corporation, with global market share growth of 300 percent in just three years, the EMC Celerra file server is the fastest-growing network-attached storage product. By combining EMC's industry-leading storage technology with a special-purpose file server architecture optimized for availability, scalability and performance, EMC Celerra sharply distinguishes itself from the competition. EMC Celerra is ideally suited for network-based applications requiring enterprise-class data sharing, including e-mail, Web hosting and e-commerce, as well as NT consolidation and software development.

To enhance customers' ability to consolidate and manage widely dispersed enterprise information more flexibly, EMC Celerra now supports Fibre Channel connectivity to any EMC Symmetrix system via any member of the newly enlarged Connectrix family of switching devices. Customers now can fully integrate Celerra's superior file-sharing capabilities within the overall Enterprise Storage Network while leveraging the connectivity and reach benefits of Fibre Channel.

For enhanced local, centralized serverless backup and restore operations in UNIX, Windows NT and multiplatform environments, Celerra also now supports VERITAS NetBackup, which employs the Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP) and other standards.

Celerra also now offers new features for enhanced business continuity and disaster recovery, including tighter integration with EMC's market-leading Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF) data mirroring software and enhanced availability with Ethernet Trunking.

Connectrix: Switched Fibre Channel Connectivity from Workgroup to Workforce

EMC today significantly expanded the scalability and market reach of the Enterprise Storage Network by unveiling the new 16-port EMC Connectrix DS-16 departmental switches and 8-port EMC Connectrix DS-8 departmental switches. The products are the result of new OEM agreements with Brocade Communication Systems, Inc., and Ancor Communications, Inc., each a provider of Fibre Channel-based storage networking devices.

The Connectrix DS-16B (Brocade) and DS-16A (Ancor) switches each offer 16 ports of Fibre Channel connectivity ideally suited for consolidating departmental data living on EMC storage systems in distributed, heterogeneous server environments. They provide high availability through redundant power supplies, fans and other components; a choice of desktop or standard rack-mount configurations; and are optimized for applications such as Web hosting, e-commerce and data mining. Similarly, the entry-level 8-port Connectrix DS-8B switch delivers the same high performance and simplified management for CLARiiON-based workgroups.

To ensure seamless integration with EMC's ESN management strategy, Brocade has joined the FibreAlliance, an open, EMC-sponsored industry coalition of some 40 Fibre Channel vendors driving standards for managing heterogeneous storage networks. The entire Connectrix family of Fibre Channel switches employs the FibreAlliance-developed technology, providing open, centralized, heterogeneous management through EMC ControlCenter and other storage network management frameworks.

In addition, EMC announced significant enhancements to the Connectrix ED-1032 Fibre Channel director, EMC's flagship ESN component created through a joint technology alignment with McDATA Corporation. The Connectrix ED-1032 Fibre Channel director delivers industry-leading switched fabric performance, scalability and fault-tolerance, together with multi-host support and powerful, easy-to-use management for 24x7 enterprise applications.

Among the many new features in the Connectrix ED-1032, support for interswitch links (E-Ports) enables the creation of larger switched fabric configurations, providing a four-fold increase in connectivity for customers who need to deploy large, scalable Enterprise Storage Networks.

EMC Infrastructure Software Delivers Unbridled Data Movement, Central Management
New and Enhanced EMC Software Fortifies Business Value of Global Information Infrastructures
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 25, 2000--EMC Corporation, the world's leading provider of enterprise storage systems, software and services, today rolled out a collection of software products to address the ever-critical and seemingly infinite information demands weighing on virtually every business. Available immediately, the new and enhanced EMC software is part of the EMC E-Infostructure Suite, delivering the world's most advanced range of storage software intelligence.

The EMC E-Infostructure Suite software, combined with the new EMC storage systems and Enginuity Operating Environment (see separate releases), delivers the tools required to convert information into business value. Together, they remove barriers to growth and enable businesses from Internet startups to the Global 2000 to absorb massive change, enjoy unbridled data movement and retain central management and control over all of their information assets.

``On the Internet, success kills,'' said Marc Andreessen, Chairman and co-founder of Loudcloud, Inc. ``Web-based businesses need an infrastructure that can scale on the fly and manage the demands of success. Unlike traditional companies, an e-business can't take time to catch its breath. EMC delivers rich software and robust systems to help Loudcloud provide a Net infrastructure to our customers, ensuring their business stays online through unexpected surges, routine upgrades and catastrophic disasters.''

Michael Ruffolo, EMC's Executive Vice President of Global Sales, Services and Marketing, said, ``In today's information-centric business, a company's success is determined by its information agility. Businesses must reach into every corner of their organizations and supply chains to capture and leverage information, to deepen understanding of customers and develop better offerings to meet their needs. EMC software makes this possible and gives customers the tools -- and the confidence -- to build their business around information and break free from competition and outdated business models.''

The new and enhanced software announced today includes:

EMC ControlCenter software -- ControlCenter is EMC's centralized management framework for monitoring and controlling customers' information infrastructures. ControlCenter enables customers to monitor, configure, control and proactively fine-tune their enterprise information from a single user console, either locally or over the Internet. Through integration of EMC Navisphere Manager software, ControlCenter also now provides a centralized point of management for EMC CLARiiON systems as an integral component of the EMC Enterprise Storage Network.
EMC SRDF software -- Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF), the world's most popular remote data replication software, enables companies to maintain a duplicate, accessible copy of all or some of their information at a secondary system located in the next building or across long distances. In addition to IP support announced this February, new SRDF capabilities include full Fibre Channel support for enhanced data replication in ESN environments, and open systems consistency groups, providing increased integrity and consistency for databases residing on multiple Symmetrix systems.
EMC TimeFinder software -- TimeFinder enables businesses to create copies of production data non-disruptively to be used for backups, data warehouse loading, decision support applications, application development and other activities that require copies of data. With today's announcement, TimeFinder now can make multiple copies to provide near instant recovery from software failures, operator errors or hacker attack. This new feature makes it highly efficient to maintain several versions of production data to be used during the course of an Internet day.
EMC CopyCross for MVS software -- Technical limitations of tape systems have prevented fast, reliable, cost-effective business continuity and disaster recovery. For the first time, customers can transparently, securely and automatically migrate MVS tape-based data to the Symmetrix system, where it is treated as native disk-based data. When tape I/Os are issued by the host, CopyCross software reroutes the data and stores it the Symmetrix system. Applications and tape management systems continue to interact with the data as if they were tape-based files. Once stored on the Symmetrix system, the data can immediately leverage the benefits of Symmetrix-based software solutions.
EMC InfoMover software -- Until today, InfoMover has enabled organizations to perform high-speed bulk file transfers between any combination of supported UNIX, Windows NT and mainframe systems via an ESN, rather than the corporate end-user network. Through major enhancements, InfoMover can now provide shared heterogeneous access to a single copy of mainframe data by multiple UNIX systems.
EMC Access Logix software -- Similar to EMC's popular Volume Logix software for Symmetrix, EMC's new Access Logix provides storage administrators with a flexible, intuitive, easy-to-implement method for CLARiiON data protection and shared storage access in an EMC Enterprise Storage Network. Access Logix enables storage administrators to configure and deploy storage capacity centrally on an as-needed basis, accelerating system reconfigurations and rollouts.
EMC Navisphere Manager software -- EMC Navisphere Manager provides centralized management, configuration, notification and control of all EMC CLARiiON storage systems on a network. Navisphere Manager has been enhanced to manage the new ESN features of the CLARiiON 4500. In addition, Navisphere Manager now integrates with EMC ControlCenter to provide a single management station for all EMC storage products.
EMC Application Transparent Failover software -- Similar to EMC's popular PowerPath software, EMC Application Transparent Failover (ATF) software continuously protects CLARiiON data and applications from I/O path failures, ensuring reliability and high-availability business operations. ATF now supports high-availability configurations and path failover through EMC Connectrix Enterprise Storage Network switches.
