Sunspot, I have used UNIX machines for as long as I have used MS software. And I like both. MS software just happens to be cheaper than the UNIX machines I used in the past. Sure, the linux machines may be cheaper now because linux is free, but if it is really better it will win out in the end. The justice dept doesn't need to do anything.
How can baby-bills told what software to write ? Let's say they come back and say that the linux version (native) will take 2 years because they are working on the networked version of office for the intranets and their staff is occupied doing that, what are you going to say ? They must abandon that effort and develop for Linux ? Come on, if we really want the gov to decide what each group in microsoft or baby-bills, then we might as well declare USA a commie nation...
You are also inconsistent in that you were ready to tell your friend that he shouldn't get elated by 120 because he was investing for the long term. Had your long-term message been really what you meant to convey, then you should tell your friend not to worry...

Sunspot, the windows version of office runs on linux using Wine => MSFT doesn't have to do a native version of Office. Also, if it is broken up, the size of the smaller office company may want to maximize profits and not choose to develop office for linux. Are you going to take away the right of a small office company to maximize profits just like you want to take it away from a big bad microsoft ???
