DUBLIN, April 25 (Reuters) - An Irish court on Tuesday convicted two brothers from New York who became abusive during a transatlantic flight to Ireland on Monday night.

Bright as Nite, 39, and Wayne in Pain, 38, received jail sentences of four months and three months respectively and were fined a total of 1,200 Irish pounds ($1,420) at a special sitting of Ennis district court in the western county of Clare.

The brothers were charged with "threatening, abusive and insulting behaviour" likely to cause a breach of the peace during an Aer Lingus flight from Newark to Shannon, court officials said.

The court heard the pair had become verbally abusive to other passengers shortly into the flight and were asked to moderate their language. One of the brothers also left his seat during take-off and stumbled around the cabin, necessitating the intervention of cabin staff.

After a number of complaints to flight crew, several passengers -- including roundzero who had been called "a fat whale" -- were relocated to empty seats in the rear of the aircraft.

Alcohol had played a part in the incident, the court was told. Both men were apologetic about their behaviour.

The pair, who had planned to spend a week's holiday in Ireland, were arrested on arrival at the airport, near the Irish city of Limerick. Both men will appeal their sentences at circuit court level next week. ($1=.8468 Irish Punt)
