WAP Godzillas vs Gorillas

Geoff is focusing on the content providers, such as the Horse wagering app, or Ticketmaster, that we mention in the report. These fit the godzilla definition.

In our writeup we focused on the enabling software that PHCM has developed and is developing. To my mind, their Software Development Kit exemplifies this, which enables the development of content. The server software is sold to the telcos, to allow access to the content that is provided by the godzilla-wannabees.

PHCM's position is similar to all the main web enablers, such as SUNW or ORCL or NTAP. The battle in this area is one of the issues that prevent PHCM from being an ordained gorilla already. There are several server suite providers. They all can handle WAP data and are essentially (as far as I know) interoperable. One reason we have gorilla potential here comes from the Oracle model--They were first among equals until they differentiated their product, at the same time making it proprietary.

But, the larger reason this is Gorilla territory is the extent to which PHCM is intertwining with the telcos. PHCM is developing knowledge of the telcos' system that is not easily replaced, and the telco is developing knowledge of PHCM's products. And this knowledge spreads through broad areas of the telcos' operations. Switching costs would be substantial.

I hope I've stated that clearly.

Best,
John
