Just reverse the situation. American mom in Florida on the outs with dad, grabs the kid and tries to float to, say, Mexico. Mother drowns, kid almost drowns, picked up by some Mexican national fishermen. Winds up in Mexico City with cousins three times removed. CNN picks up story, can't watch or read news without seeing his precious little face smiling and laughing while playing with newfound "cousins". American dad wants to retrieve child which was taken from US without knowledge or permission. Cousins in Mexico, three times removed, refuse and insist he'll have a better life there.

I'm sure all these Monday morning quarterbacks would agree with the Mexican relatives that this American child should stay there irrespective of the father's wishes. Not! That's what I consider to be an arrogant double standard.

Sad thing is, it probably happens all the time (sans sinking boat and perishing parent). We just don't get to read about it on the front page.

That's my say. Although I understand and appreciate there are intelligent opinions on both sides of the issue, I really don't want to debate it here because a) there are undoubtedly on-topic forums for such, and b) my fingers are already tired from too much typing.
