<<This is the antithesis of religious freedom as we know the idea.>> Ya have to admit that the idea has changed over the last few hundred years. Initially it meant freedom to worship "The GOD" which is a universally recognized figure in Western religions. Since there was so much unnecessary bickering (and worse) over when to bow and prostrate one self, or which text carried the accurate story, the need for religious freedom was established. Now it means you are free to pick your favorite demon to worship anyway you please. Actually now it means do what ever you want and call it religion. This is an assault on the term IMO.

<<I would imagine that such a society would only respect its fellow man so long as that fellow man toes the line of the official religion.>>

I don't agree. In reality, I am a Christian. My neighbor is a Hindu man whom I respect very much. There is also quite a large Islam community in the area where I live. There are also Jewish people in my family. I respect all of these people, and I feel that I am respected in return. The common bond is that most of these people are striving to be the best person they can be by following their faith. And most Faiths that I'm aware of include respect for your fellow human being. In the United States we have freedom of religion. But it seems that some people would like to abolish religion completely.

What if a denomination other than yours got to decide the nuts&bolts of how God was to be officially and socially respected?

Where have you been? Children are not allowed to pray in school.
