"Required literature" makes sense to me in that many of our cultural metaphors come from a core set of great books. Homer, Cicero, Milton etc.
I am not expecting to define the list here, but I do believe that a set of twenty or thirty books should be a "not negotiable" basic literacy package.
And to suggest that required reading of Homer is tantamount to accepting what he says as true is ... no, I don't buy that. I've read many books and am glad to have read them , but no way do I agree with more than even a fraction of them!
