25 April 2000
France Telecom, former telecoms monopoly, plans to launch its GPRS Internet-capable mobile phone service across the whole of France by end-2000.

The service is currently available to customers of the company's Itineris mobile phone service in eastern Paris and Lille.

France Telecom also plans to launch a similar service through its subsidiaries in the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Italy and Portugal. The operator is investing hundreds of millions of French Francs in the installation of GPRS transmitters.

The company hopes that 1 million customers in France will be using its mobile Internet service by end-2000.

As part of its plans, France Telecom has already placed orders for 5 million Internet-enabled mobile handsets from manufacturers such as Nokia, Siemens, Motorola and Mitsubishi.
