there have been plenty of periods in just the past
30 or 40 years that would make you wish for a market
like this one. Of course we can't tell from looking
at old charts how fast things happened, but I
would bet that, like now, there were always slow and
fast days.

But your point is well taken. 1999 brought with it
a significant increase in short term volatility
that was not present in the few years preceding
it and that volatility is still with us now. However
I think it was those few preceding years that were
abnormal.

For example, here are some good old fashioned wild markets:
users.uswest.net
users.uswest.net

Here are the markets we'd gotten used to up until
last year:
users.uswest.net
users.uswest.net

and here we are now:
users.uswest.net
users.uswest.net

You might say we have it easy, as the current
market is fairly aesthetic and well behaved.
It's just not as easy to dance with as the one
that got us here.

Never in my 25 years as a player I have seen the market action like this. I afraid this kind of action is making more and more people traders, feeding on itself.

Max, i'm sorry to say, the only year in this century's stock market history that has seen similar volatility was 1929.

however, looking forward i expect us to beat that infamous year in terms of volatility.

regards,

hb

Max, i have to amend my statement about past market volatility insofar as the '29 comparison holds only true for the Nasdaq, not the other indices. the Dow in that year was exhibiting the same volatility as the Nasdaq now. there is of course the '87 dip that was an all time volatility record for a single day. but in terms of consistent extreme up/down volatility the Dow in '29 and the Nasdaq now have no peers.

note that foreign markets, e.g. Hong Kong have at times been even more volatile.

regards,

hb
