The only two things lifting the embargo will achieve is being able to buy Cuban cigars and lawsuits. Lawsuits against European and Canadian companies who have taken over the rich gold and nickel properties formerly divided up by American companies.

"...
I believe the people of Cuba would benefit greatly if the embargo was lifted. They might even benefit so much and be exposed to so much
American culture that the communist government might become less relevant to their lives...."

I agree totally...

Incidently, is that not the same argument they use to justify their trades with China despite the obvious evidence of human atrocities there? Why the contradiction in Cuba? What Hypocrisy!!!!

<< They might even benefit so much and be exposed to so much American culture that the communist government might become less relevant to their lives. >>

Will American culture benefit the Cuban people, who are languishing in Castro's prisons, who were thrown there without due process?

Will American culture benefit the Cuban parents, who's children are taken away from them?

Will American culture benefit the Cuban men, women and children who are shot trying to escape from Castro's brutal regime?

Will American culture benefit the Cuban people, who are only allowed to watch or read what Castro wants them to read?

<< Western cultural influences helped to topple communism in eastern Europe and it could do so in Cuba too. >>

Helped, yes. But Cuba does not have a Mikhail Gorbachev having the power to bring freedom to Cuba, as he did in Europe.

<< Castro is a relic from the past who would become even more irrelevant if the embargo was lifted. >>

What does enriching Castro have to do with him becoming irrelevant. If anything, additional funds would make Castro more powerful and more destructive.

<< Why don't we use the engagement policy with Cuba like we do with China? >>

Castro and Cuba can be contained.

<< Don't we want to have ties with Cuba when Castro eventually dies, so we can influence the direction of post-Castro cuba? >>

That's why we need a strong Cuban Exile community.
