EarthLink Waives All Up-Front Costs on EarthLink DSL Nationwide; Combined With Self-Installation, The New Offer Should Make EarthLink DSL More Attractive
===========================================================
ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 27, 2000--One of the nation's top
broadband providers raised the competitive stakes today, as EarthLink
(NASDAQ:ELNK) announced that it will waive all setup, equipment and
installation fees on its EarthLink DSL service nationwide.
The offer allows EarthLink members to save up to $300 in initial
fees when they sign up for EarthLink's $49.95 consumer DSL service.
EarthLink, which earlier this week announced that it has reached
the 50,000-broadband-customer milestone, implemented the new pricing
plan to spur new broadband customers in the 30-plus markets it
currently offers the service.
Combined with the introduction of self-installation in some areas,
the new offer allows EarthLink to overcome two hurdles slowing mass
acceptance of DSL service -- the high initial cost of setup and the
time it takes to get the service up and running.
"Our research showed that the biggest barrier to people getting
broadband services was the substantial up-front price for equipment
and installation," said Mike Lunsford, executive vice president of
broadband services at EarthLink.
"We think that by saving our members hundreds of dollars initially
and cutting down on the time it takes to get installed, more of them
will try our broadband experience. And with our industry reputation
for customer service, they can rest assured that they're in good hands
if they need help or want to find compelling Internet content."
In addition to waiving nationwide setup fees, EarthLink has
instituted other strategies to attract new broadband members. After
very positive test results in Dallas, EarthLink began implementing
self-install kits that cut the DSL provisioning cycle in half by
eliminating the need for an on-site phone company visit.
EarthLink has also created regional promotions on top of these,
such as a three-months-for-the-price-of-one deal currently being
offered in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
EarthLink currently offers DSL service in more than 30 major
metropolitan markets and cable in nine areas, and should have coverage
in more than 2,200 Central Offices (COs) in 40 markets by the end of
the second quarter. For more information about EarthLink's broadband
services, call 888/EARTHLINK, Ext. 64DSL or visit

other award-winning Internet access, Web hosting and e-commerce
