When I write small companies, I mean companies in the size up to 50 employees. You cannot sell a product to consumers without having written instructions in a language that can be understood locally. In Denmark this means danish, norwegian or swedish. In Germany it means German etc. European typically know 2-4 languages, but we do have more languages than that. I think all EU documents are translated into approx. 13-16 languages. Switzerland has 4 languages.

If you want to sell something, then you have to find out each countries distribution system. I mean, even on the internet, each country has different national search engines. In the Netherlands, eggs and chicken are sold in special shops, whereas in Denmark, eggs are sold together with dairies. In Germany you go into a bank if you want to buy a house. In Denmark you buy a house buy having the house financed in a kind of financial institution I won't explain here (it's a silly system).

In Denmark, 98% (!) of all employees are organized in a labor union. In France I think it is 3-8%. In France, nearly everybody has access to Minitel, some kind of BBS system, whereas few families have access to the internet. In Denmark, 50-90% of all children aged 15 have their own mobile GSM cell phone with nationwide coverage, and 70% of all children families have internet.

It takes quite an investigation in the markets before you take the investment to get into that new market. It is nearly impossible to enter all markets at once, unless you have enough financial backing.
