It's all relative

The age of the million dollar mainframe is fast ending. However compared to the sub-1K PC market the commoditized server opportunity still represents a huge area of high-margin sales for INTC, CPQ, DELL, etc. Believe me, there is good business in selling endless racks of $10K-$50K ESN peripheral servers.

Also, remember that total IT spending will continue to grow. That growth will be disproportionately skewed to storage, however. That's where the 80/20 ratio comes from.

Dear Tony: Be careful when reading figures. I dont know what the split will be between Servers and Data Storage but there is the possability the GRAND TOTAL increases dramatically thus providing large market for both. Remember, companies like SUNW, CPQ and many others do in fact sell data storage, along with servers so I am quite sure the picture isnt so bleak for them as that PR would have you believe. At this point in time, SUNW order backlog continues to grow and they havent even introduced their new line yet, that is to come this summer. I am sure EMC will do very well, but I am also sure so will SUNW. JDN
