I have come to view the education system as we apply it as an indoctrination process. Apparently you don't. When you prescribe the set of literature books that all students must read and call it a cultural anchor you are in effect telling them that the values of our society are based here in. They may not buy it. As a preachers kid can grow up not accepting the scriptures as authentic. I go to the theater and read constantly. But if you require me to read something that is the basis for something in our culture, you need to give me a real good reason.

I have no problem with prescriptive math, reading, geography or writing courses as these are skill and process oriented. The students can remain aloof about the context of the math problem. I don't believe we are slipping subliminal messages into the story problems, for example. I have no problem with requiring American civics as this is our legal basis for living among one another. I have no problem with world culture, politics, history and science. Even though I know they are presented in a biased form, it is a bias that favors of my kid and I see no possibility for an unbiased presentation. Most of the other subjects offered do not need to be required but are fine for enriching the curriculum.
