A while ago, someone posted here that he had been reading Caroline Baum of Bloomberg News. I read her column every once in a while.

According to her, Pat Jackman of BLS is quite a character. Here is my impression of what his approach is:

(1) He first tries to cook the numbers. You all know the saying: "If you torture the numbers long enough, they will tell you what you want to know."
(2) If the numbers don't look good after manipulation, selected items are excluded.
(3) And if that doesn't solve the problem, he says that you can't make a conclusion from one or two months' numbers.
(4) He also begins with the same statement every time a number is released; "There is no inflation," regardless of what is being released.

He fits in really well with the current administration.
