Looks like a bit of good news today - anyone have some insight into the importance of this particular win?

Veeco Metrology Wins Competitive Evaluation for Automated Semiconductor Tools

SANTA BARBARA, Calif., May 1, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Veeco Metrology, a
subsidiary of Veeco Instruments Inc. (NASDAQ: VECO), announced today a
significant competitive win for its Dimension(TM) Vx Atomic Force Profiler (AFP)
from a leading U.S.-based manufacturer of DRAMs (dynamic random access memory
chips).

After a detailed competitive evaluation lasting more than four months, the Vx
AFP was selected as the best production tool for two important applications -
etch depth and CMP metrology. This manufacturer also designated the Vx AFP as
the "tool of choice" for these applications, which is expected to lead to
multiple orders over the next two years.

Don Kania, Ph.D., VP/GM of the Santa Barbara Operation commented, "This
selection establishes the Dimension Vx as the tool of choice for two major
in-line metrology applications, etch and CMP. The technology that made this
victory possible is simply not available from any other manufacturer. Equally
important in our success was the total package that Veeco supplies: fab-ready
tools along with superior applications and service support. We are extremely
gratified with this win and with the growing worldwide demand for the Vx."

The Dimension Vx Atomic Force Profiler is a multigenerational, fully-automated
production tool which combines the strengths of Veeco's atomic force microscope
and stylus profiler technologies for 200mm and 300mm wafers.

Mark,

Another good call on shorting VECO at 60. I didn't do it, but I think VECO is going lower from here, along with the rest of the market. Perhaps I can get back in under $40 or near $30 where I first purchased it. The market environment is brutal, the NAZ is going to break 3000, IMHO, so I'm on the sidelines for now.

Cheers,

Tom
