Dow Jones Newswires

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 26, 2000--Citrix(R) Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:CTXS) announced its MetaFrame(TM) application server software has been chosen by SAP AG (NYSE:SAP) to expand the application access capabilities of mySAP.com(TM) Workplace, an enterprise Web portal that gives users personalized, role-based access to all the applications and tools they need from a single access point. mySAP.com is the Internet solution that connects employees, customers, suppliers and business partners as if they all were one company. Citrix MetaFrame can be used to provide access to any Windows(R)-based application from mySAP.com Workplace.

'While SAP has completely Web-enabled its software by using SAPGUI for HTML, a user's ability to access all required applications through a single, personalized Web portal is an important milestone in improving ease-of-use and flexibility,' said Gunther Tolkmit, Chief Marketing Officer, SAP AG. 'mySAP.com Workplace offers this capability by giving users browser-based access to all SAP applications, Web content and Internet-based services. To allow mySAP.com Workplace users to seamlessly access any non-Web-enabled application, Citrix MetaFrame adds a reliable and fast technology to our solution.'

'The Web browser is quickly becoming the preferred universal access point for computing tools and software,' said Douglas Wheeler, senior vice president of Marketing for Citrix. 'One of MetaFrame's strengths is the ability to provide access to virtually any application from a single device, including standard browsers. Because today's computing environments frequently comprise a mix of application platforms, MetaFrame is an important enabler of comprehensive, browser-based application access. We are pleased to provide this capability to users of mySAP.com Workplace.'

Further, in a joint initiative to be launched in May, Citrix will offer all SAP customers the opportunity to test the advantages of MetaFrame software in conjunction with mySAP.com Workplace. SAP customers will have access to a trial version of MetaFrame, providing them the means to test the flexibility of the mySAP.com Workplace portal to incorporate any application available on Windows.

A cloud is a term for a switch or aggregating point in a frame relay network. For example, a corporate data center may communicate to remote facilities over a frame relay wide area network. The corporate data center may have a T-1 size pipe into a telco frame relay "cloud", while remote branches may have smaller pipes into the same cloud based on the amount of data they need to move. IP addressing keeps track of which packets belong to who. Pipes into the cloud can be purchased for fixed guaranteed data rates, minimums, maximums, etc.

Whether or nor this has anything whatsoever to do with "cloudware" being discussed here is another matter........

For a definition of "cloud" as applies to networking see whatis.com. This is a great source for tech definitions.
A cloud is often used as a symbol in diagrams to imply that there may be lots of assorted connections, routers, switches etc. inside the cloud, but the points of connection to the cloud are the issues under consideration in the diagram. This simplifies the diagram. (This definition is from Computer Desktop Encyclopedia) As the term cloud would imply, it is thus not a specific point.

Loudcloud and Cloudware....

Clouds are used to represent a network in networking diagrams. This network could be public, private, sub-nets, etc. The reason for doing this is that in many cases, the details of the network aren't as interesting as the connections between (router traffic, throughput, etc.).

This explains why the company is called Loudcloud. The Cloudware annoucement seems to be trumpeting software writtened specifically for ASP site management. It is my understanding that a lot of ASP-hosting services have pieced together a lot of different systems without an overall systems management framework. That means that as a customer, you have to deal with a the complexity (to some level). Cloudware is a lot of "glue" that ties everything together nicely. Because of this integration, reports about the site have increased granularity. This allows a customer to gain a great deal more visibility about what is happening with their site and make adjustments accordingly.
