I see the use of force was absolutely needed to return the boy to his father. No negotiable settlement was made possible given the circumstances, the recalcentent behavior of the extended family holding the child against the INS and DOJ's wishes.

The doj and ins wishes? since when do americans have to dance to govt wishes?

If you say, "since Miami." I can't ans you.

I believe that you are wrong. As the evidence points out, the negotiators were extremely, I repeat, extremely close to a settlement when Reno lost her cool and went along with the storm troopers.
As for my opinion of Elian's father, he is one of the biggest cowards I have ever witnessed in my fairly long lifetime! (and I have met and seen many cowards in my life, including myself to a certain degree in my youth) (it takes a former coward to know another one so well) On this basis alone, the man is poison to his son.
