Your great grandfather did a good thing, my grandfather's mother was UTE.

Years ago, I was facing a bleak situation. We were going to backpack in the High Sierra and our trailhead was at the end of the highest (elevation) road for eastern access to the sierra. I was in the first car load of people. We had no packs or anything. The driver left. The truck with the rest of the people and our packs was somewhere behind us on the road. (we didn't know that the truck had broken down and was sitting in lone pine with a shot tranny). Anyways, sun went down it got really really cold. we ended up using the head for a mini-camp fire/shelter. (well we were inside it...)

We managed on a single solitary match book (the kind u get for free)...

we didn't burn the thing down, we just had a small fire on the inside to keep warm and it was a lot colder inside than it was on the outside.

The next day a different truck came up the road with our packs and the rest of the group. we had survived...

and it had snowed in the middle of August...

Too bad that head didn't have electricity.... but at the same time it was probably a good thing.

David

PS: ever since then, I always carry some calcium carbide pellets when I backpack. Because with a single pellet you can make a fire in any condition. All you do is get some wood, doesn't matter if its still green. put the wood in a pile. fill a can with water put it under the wood in the middle of it. Drop a pellet in the water. Wait for the gas to rise (u can see it). toss a match into that 'smoke' and instant hot fire.....

.... The funny thing was when the leader came up the next day he commented how the head had a 'fire' smell to it...

mark,

heads are only on boats and are not usually wired.

I would not care to sit on a "wired" head.

It would certainly be a "lifting" experience.

Have fun,
Phil
