North American gold mine output down 30 tonnes in '99 NEW YORK, April 26 (Reuters) - North American gold mine production fell 30 tonnes in 1999, with U.S. output dropping seven percent to 341.9 tonnes last year because of weak bullion prices, Gold Fields Mineral Services Ltd (GFMS) said Wednesday. "This result was brought about by further closures during the year, associated with exhausted reserves and a lack of economic viability due to poor market conditions," Gold Fields said in its Gold Survey 2000 released today. North American mine production fell to 499.8 tonnes in 1999, from 530.3 tonnes in 1998, Gold Fields said. U.S. production fell to 341.9 tonnes from 366 tonnes. Canadian production fell four percent to 157.9 tonnes in 1999. Meanwhile, Latin American gold output "powered ahead""in 1999, growing almost 13 percent to 378 tonnes. "Gold output for this region has expanded by 72 percent in the last decade and now contributes as much as 15 percent of the global total," Gold Fields said in its release.
