Company Press Release
ACOM Selects Harmonic for Major Launch of Digital Television Service in Brazil
SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 25, 2000--

Harmonic enables innovative broadband fixed wireless operator to quickly come to market with standards-based digital service Harmonic Inc. (Nasdaq: HLIT - news) today announced that its TRANsend digital platform has been deployed by ACOM, Brazil's first digital broadband fixed wireless operator, for its wide-scale rollout of digital television service in Brazil.

The service was successfully launched in three major cities in March of 2000. Several additional implementations are planned during the course of this year. By providing ACOM with a flexible and technically sophisticated platform for delivering advanced digital service, Harmonic has enabled this innovative operator to quickly respond to market demand. Specifically, TRANsend provides ACOM the flexibility to customize its digital service offering as well as to deploy standards-based conditional access and set-top-boxes.

``Harmonic and ACOM have worked together to define and implement the optimal broadband architecture for our access network,'' said Paulo Areas, ACOM's President. ``Harmonic's digital platform positions ACOM for today's and tomorrow's business opportunities. Today, we are providing our customers the immediate benefit of superior digital television service. Tomorrow, we can quickly migrate the capabilities of the same Harmonic platform to provide an interactive digital service offering. As a result, we are able to maximize the value of ACOM's investment in the communications infrastructure we are building.''

``ACOM is clearly an operator with a vision,'' said Kirk Flatow, Harmonic's Vice President of Sales. ``ACOM is turning its vision into a reality with an aggressive implementation plan. We are excited to be facilitating ACOM's business objectives by helping them to quickly capitalize on new market opportunities.''

Flexibility is a key benefit of Harmonic's TRANsend digital broadband platform. TRANsend allows ACOM to receive satellite feeds at each of its sites, create a customized program lineup, and then distribute this customized content to ACOM subscribers over its broadband fixed wireless network.

``We performed an extensive evaluation of digital broadband delivery systems available today, and Harmonic offers us a set of superior, cost-effective solutions,'' said Luis Fernando Martins, ACOM's Chief Technical Officer. ``The TRANsend platform is extremely compact and provides an ease of configurability and remote access that makes it ideal for our immediate needs of transmitting 56 digital services. In addition, TRANsend's open architecture ensures that the implementation of new applications will be accomplished with minimal reconfiguration, thereby accelerating our time to market for new services.''

All platforms selected by ACOM are compliant with DVB and/or Open Cable industry standards, including Harmonic's TRANsend digital platform, Mentor Data System's (www.mentor.com.tw) set-top-boxes and NagraVision's (www.nagra.com) conditional access systems.
