The "strength of their concern" of the Miami relatives has imho been considerably augmented by the little-world mentality of an exile community that defines itself by its hatred of its chosen icons, that works itself into an us-against-Them frenzy and classifies Them as all who disagree to any degree whatsoever with their stated goals and methods, to the point where they would not only consider the theft of another man's child, but they would actually try to accomplish and then justify that theft.

Economic factors come into it as well, imho, e.g. CANF checks.
Extending each individuals' 15min-of-fame is a motive as well imho ... the facts in this piece on Donato the Fake Fisherman come as no surprise - washingtonpost.com

There is considerable background in the NY Times piece which seems to be being ignored by the Killa Kommie fer Krist types - nytimes.com

... among which is evidence that Juan Miguel genuinely prefers to live in Cuba, that Castro told him 29 Nov that he could emigrate, and that he declined the choice the Miami relatives were attempting to force him into - the choice between his son and his country. He wants to retain both, and he is completely within his rights to do so.
