What I mainly care about is that the Chinese perceive that there is a gentle upward slope toward prosperity rather than a cataract of violence. This is a self-interested view. There are so many Chinese that I could almost imagine them building a pontoon bridge out of themselves across the Pacific and pouring into the US. To put it more seriously, we don't want what Napoleon called "the sleeping giant" to begin having nightmares and start thrashing around, even if the easiest thing to do would be to invade Russia by land.
