The only assumption necessary is that the average long position is equal to the average short position, very reasonable, IMO.

In reality, there are fewer shorts proportionally than ever, not more; in fact, there are so few institutional short sellers that most people that maintain statistics for the most part no longer maintain databases of dedicated short sellers, because the database is so small now.

Even forgetting the above, which is obviously an opinion, the point made to you was that the number of longs far outnumbers the number of shorts, a point that you have to agree with.
