Almost all cultures are male dominated. Males not only have big penises they are stronger (generally). This male domination doesn't make sense anymore where tasks are not linked to sexual traits- so we have movements in some parts of the world for gender equity.

Of course prizing a penis in a male doesn't mean you COULDN'T prize (for example) the clitoris in a woman (and thus prize female sexuality equally with male sexuality)- but that doesn't seem to be how we've evolved. See below for a theory explaining sex based differential treatment.

And then we have movements- like the one in Afghanistan- in opposition to gender equity.

Women can only have limited offspring. Fertility is very limited compared to the male- you would expect the female human to be VERY selective- since not only her breeding is limited BUT she has a great investment in the children since they mature slowly.

Males can get multiple women pregnant- their reproductivity is unlimited, except by selection (compared to a woman's limitations)- and EXCEPT, for the social limitation that they may face of being required to provide for their offspring.

So different pressures on males and females since the beginning of our species- is it any wonder the sexes have different strategies, and that society has different ways of treating the sexes? And thus oppressive isn't really the right way to say it. I'd say gender staightjacketing was a better way to put it- males and females are pushed into sex roles-
