The legal for differentiating trademarks is argued with respect the the "mind of the consumer". If the product or industry were close enough to confuse the consumer into thinking that the product originated with a particular producer. For the the K7/Spitfire the question is whether a consumer would likely jump to the conclusion that the Duron was produced by the same "Duron" that manufacturers paint. AMD is most likely safe with Duron in this regard.
