Selling naked puts does tie up much margin. I maximize premium collection by selling in-the-money, sometimes way-in-the-money puts. Collecting up to $10 and more per share or $1000 per contract, and seeing them expiring worthless can be very satisfying and rewarding.

I generally sell puts after the stock pulls back a few or more points, thus increasing the premium. Also I sell puts only for the immediate expiration date, thus making money every month.

With AMD going up leaps and bounds, keeping the premium money is like what you said, a "gimme."
