Shares in Linux-related companies have been battered so badly by the market that VA Linux (LNUX) said Thursday it had to amend its purchase of Andover.net (ANDN) to no longer include $60 million in cash, since the cash would now constitute more than 10 percent of the total worth of the deal, exposing it to taxation.

When the deal was announced in February, the stock portion of the acquisition was worth about $840 million, but, since then, VA Linux shares have lost two-thirds of their value. Andover, with remarkable confidence, shrugged off the change.

YET,Linux could be the big beneficiary of MSFT's breakup..a chance of a lifetime.
