Any operational computer system needs to be monitored. Also, systems that capture user data (like web sites) provide the possibility of mining (analyzing) the data to improve the site (where to invest in new content), better market the site to users (personalization), etc. When a company is hosting and managing its own website, they can decide to invest in the infrastructure needed to monitor and capture data as rapidly as needed by their business strategy. Browsing around the web, you can see a wide range of investments that people have made or not made in this area. Consider the infrastructure and service provided by leaders like Amazon and Yahoo vs. many smaller sites. The current ASP providers haven't done much to improve this situation. The smallest don't do much beyond providing a hosting environment. The larger players provide data replication and redundancy by having multiple, geographically distributed data centers. All the players provide some level to reporting data back to their customers, but those data feeds are limited in nature (at certain periods of time) or require extensive investment by the customers to customize. Loudcloud is setting up these data centers. They are also taking things a step further by claiming to provide an management and reporting infrastructure for their customers. In theory, this would make their hosting service more attractive since it provides better operational support to their clients and allows their clients to better understand and take advantage of things happening on their sites.
