The reported exchanges between China and Taiwan seem like a series of chess-like moves. China wants Taiwan to 'assume' reunification or face war.

In the 1962 Cuban missile crisis, Castro was incensed when the Soviets backed away from war and compromised with with the US. Had it been up to him, Cuba would have been blasted away, but so would Washington and New York.
