>> Malaysia: HP unveils Jornada pocket PC

By Stephen Boey

IT'S a little ahead of its time ... the Jornada Pocket PC that Hewlett-Packard (HP) Sales (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd introduced to the domestic market earlier this week.

It is built with BlueTooth in mind. BlueTooth technology, expected to be offered for general use in October, will enable wireless connectivity among similarly-enabled devices at close proximity, whether hand held or fixed line. No more messing around with cables or having to line up the devices for infra-red connectivity.

"The Jornada Pocket PC user will be able to dial into the Internet even with his mobile phone is in his pocket or briefcase," Mr Jorgen Wallgren, product manager of HP personal systems group, Asia Pacific, said.

Buyers of the 16 MB RAM Jornada 545, priced at RM1,888 and the 32 MB RAM Jornada 548, priced at RM2,388, can in the meantime access the Internet via infra-red connectivity, USB cradle or serial cable.

Users can also connect the Jornada wirelessly via selected mobile phones using Socket Communications' digital phone cards for Internet access, email, short messaging service and remote access to corporate servers.

HP's Connection Advisor utility on the Jornada Web site will help customers choose the correct wireless solution for their needs and provide links for hardware purchase.

The Connection Advisor will also include a free software bundle including Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) browser and wireless Fax and short message service applications. This will be available for download from June 1.

Future plans for the Jornada 540 series include wireless accessories for GSM/GPRS networks and CompactFlash Type 1 BlueTooth module to enable wireless access to the Internet via cellular phones and connectivity to other BlueTooth-enabled devices.

While GSM today has a transfer rate limited 9.6kbps, good only for text, GPRS (general packet radio service) will enable packet switching at up to 128kbps to support rich media applications like imaging and audio.

The Jornada 540 series comes complete with everything a user needs to get started. Included in the box are a travel charger, USB cradle, and a full suite of Microsoft Pocket PC applications including Outlook, Work, Excel, Internet Explorer, Windows Media Play (which supports MP3 and WMA formats), eBook Reader, and a desktop version of Microsoft Outlook 2000.

HP has also included its exclusive Home Menu and Task Switcher; PeaceMaker for exchanging contacts with Palm users via infra-red; Yahoo! Messenger for anytime, anywhere communication; and Landware's OmniSolve Calculator. Built-in security include hardware serialisation and password administration.

And it's a fun machine, too. HP has included Image Expert CE for viewing, editing and sharing digital images; ZIOGolf for a virtual game on the greens; MusicMatch Jukebox for recording CDs into MP3/WMA formats and AudibleManager for managing audio books.

With such a wide repertoire of applications it is little wonder then that sales of the Jornada 540 series has exceeded expectations everywhere since its launch on April 19 in the US.
