I see almost no chance of a 50 point hike as the long as the dollar is surging. A surging dollar is disinflationary to be sure. But if the greenback tanks ....

Mike, i agree with that assessment, but their hand may be forced anyway. and not all of the FOMC members strike me as irresponsible. some do, e.g. McTeer should probably look for a profession better suited to his abilities.

IMO, the US has the luxury of time on their side, what with the weak nature of other major currencies. Thus there is no need for aggressive measures to shore up the dollar, from the inflation bogie. While I do agree that tightening is necessary, I see no need for rash moves, at this time. I see a steady dose of medicine as 1/4 pt raises until trade imbalance changes trend, either by increased consumption on the part of our trade partners or deccreased consumption on the domestic front.
