Matt, I appreciate your concerns here. Certainly you don't seem to be part of the lunatic crowd who were overblowing the issue to extremes. And it is my opinion that Intel didn't do such a great job in PR, nor did they have the right idea in promoting the Pentium III serial number as a bulletproof tool for digital authentication.

My beef was with those who equated the serial number with the tools of a police state. Believe me, I've seen all of the arguments against the CPU ID, and it was very apparent to me that logic and rationality was tossed right out the window. And in my mind, that sort of extremism hurts their cause more than it helps.

This all reminds me of the Pentium FDIV fiasco. The bug itself was just a minor one, certainly something that would not affect the vast majority of users out there. But the hysteria rose, and Intel didn't do such a great job in handling the PR. As a result, the FDIV thing became one of Intel's greatest ... er ... learning experiences.
