Semiconductor Production to Climb Rapidly nikkeibp.asiabiztech.com April 28, 2000 (TAIPEI) -- Taiwan's semiconductor production is expected to jump 59.5 percent to NT$675.3 billion in 2000, following a spate of mergers, acquisitions and technology transfers. This year's surge follows the sharp 49.4 percent growth to NT$423.5 billion in 1999. An Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) survey indicated that the production of IC design companies could grow 30.7 percent, compared with production growth of 77.1 percent in the manufacturing sector, 33 percent in packing and 30.8 percent in testing. Contract manufacturing in the industry is expected to grow 98.6 percent. This year's semiconductor industry boom follows a series of multinational combinations, technical upgrades and transfers. As e-commerce and information home appliance are becoming part of daily life for most people, the developments in SIP, SMIF, and SOC are upgrading the IC design, packing and testing sectors. ID design for communications, networks and multimedia chipsets reported robust demand, with 10 leading designers seeing their sales grow more than 100 percent last year. Original equipment manufacturing accounts for 50 percent of semiconductor production. And 14 of 20 leading global semiconductor giants are now major clients to Taiwan's wafer foundry operators, paving the way for the island to become a global semiconductor manufacturing center. Large international companies are increasingly fielding orders for testing to Taiwan. An ITRI survey indicated 70 percent of wafer products manufactured in Taiwan completed their packing and testing locally, with the remaining 30 percent being packed and tested elsewhere. However, the survey suggested that if operators wanted to win IDM orders, there was a need for technical upgrades in packing and testing, cost cuts and more clear-cut segmentation in product lines. (Commercial Times, Taiwan) I'm beginning to feel 'peaked' :) BP
